This week’s Empire Building Kit, Week 23, just wrapped up.  The week focused on creating buzz for your business through giveaways and contests.  Also included was an “Emperor-in-Training” study featuring Tyler Tervooren of Advanced Riskology.    Tyler freely admitted that his first business idea didn’t have much legs.   Only after getting laid off from his job, was he able to narrow down his focus and create – in remarkably short time (2 months, to be precise) – a blog that already has 2000 subscribers, and a business that is almost earning him a livable wage just from affiliate sales.

Am I impressed?  Yes. You bet!

Meanwhile, I feel like I’m in the “reflection” period at this point about my business and the direction I want to take it.  Not that I don’t have ideas, but given that my husband and I still don’t have a permanent place to live in New York City, there is little to do but wait and reflect (and try not to go grey with worry!)

I’ve learned some important lessons from my own failures, too.

  1. I know from first-hand experience that doing a giveaway won’t bring you viewers if you don’t already have them
  2. I’ve learned that you have to ask for help…and referrals

and…

3. I’ve learned that just when you are ready to give up, people often finally start to notice what you are doing

So, while I’m a little disappointed that Chris Guillebeau, the Empire Building Kit’s author, hasn’t decided to feature me as an “Emperor-in-Training” yet, I’m also aware that my stick-to-it-ness and ability to continue to learn and grow is laudable in its own right.  I may not be there yet, but I’m on my way!
