I have a prized orchid – prized because I love it – not because it’s a super exotic variety. Ever since we were given it by a friend, it has bloomed regularly just after the holidays. The blooms last for about 6 months, and then the plant goes dormant for another 6.
But one of the reasons why I prize it is because when we were given the plant it only had ONE stalk of blooms. Now it regularly produces TWO.
I think it’s my husband’s fault, actually. He accidentally decapitated both stalks one summer when he closed the curtains. I was devastated (he thought the marriage might be over) but my mom declared that the plant probably needed pruning and would be better off for it.
And you know, I think she was right!
of course. I’m always right. : )
(it’s AMAZING)

Hi Ma,
Well, I was thinking that of course…but not all my fans are acquainted with your brilliance;-)
Isn’t the orchid pretty? I thought the blooms were smaller this year, but now that they’ve fully opened, I think they’re just as big as in previous years. I’m running out of orchid food, so I’ll have to find some more soon.
I lurve you, J

It looks beautiful. Sometimes pruning accidents are the best thing!
Yah, that’s what my Mommy said. If I have Andy decapitate both stalks again do you think the plant will produce THREE stalks next year?

Beautiful! Orchids are my favorites, but I’ve never owned one. I should think about remedying that someday…
Hi Celeste,
I had bad luck with the one other orchid I owned. However, I think I have the right combination of light in our NY apartment, and I also feed my orchid when I water it with orchid food (a spray). Mostly, though, I neglect it…and my husband decapitates it now and then. Go figure!
