Yesterday when I was teaching my 11-year-old violin student, my cell phone rang.  I never answer the phone when I’m teaching, but since I was technically “on call” for work at the ballet, I had to take a look to see who was calling. Which caused my student to exclaim…

“Wow!  You have a flip-top phone?  Those are so old!”

(His eyes got even bigger when I told him that I don’t text.)

Even so, I’ll admit that I’m only a step or so removed from the millions of others who spend their days with their eyes cast downward at their screens.  So this video, which has gone viral on Facebook, is a good wake-up look up call for us all.

Old fashioned?  Maybe.  But I still like feeling tuned in.  How about you?

Very good video. I totally agree. Even if I had to watch it on my computer!

Yah…I’m going to hold onto my “old-fashioned” phone for as long as possible. I spend a lot of time on the computer as it is; don’t feel the need to have a computer with me ALL the time, though.

      I love you, MM – J

I also have a litle flip phone, and I do text on it, but it is slow and cumbersome! That’s why I prefer to text on my iPad, via eMessage or Facebook. It’s hard to have a balance….I don’t want to have those constant downcast eyes, but there is plenty online with which to be fascinated!

      Hi Helen,

I am trying to be more mindful when I talk on the phone so that I’m just listening/talking rather than trying to multitask. For one thing, I can’t work on an illustration and talk at the same time. I end up either making mistakes or mumbling “um” and “ah” over and over. Walking and talking is still a hard habit to kick since I like to have company on my walks. 🙂 But with all of the NYC street noise, it can be distracting, too…

I have to play the matinee today so I’d better get showered and ready.

      Ciao! Joana
