Over the past few years I’ve struggled to find the right words to describe my artwork.   “Whimsically fashion-based” is the closest I’ve come to describing what I’m after since neither the terms “fashion illustration” nor “cartoon” exactly apply. Works in progress? Perhaps, but that is the nature of creativity.  My end goal, however, has always been to make the viewer smile, laugh or feel amused somehow.  Call it a reflection of my own outlook on life or maybe just my survival technique, but I do feel that life goes a lot smoother if manners and a good dose of humor are applied.

Thanks, Helen! How are things going? Are you enjoying your summer and the time away from the MSO? After quite a busy summer, I now have a much lighter schedule and will be going back to volunteering with NY Cares this week. (I can’t believe that the last time I volunteered was in November. Egads! Where does the time go?)

Anyway, I’m off to start my day. Sending a big hug your way… Joana

I am having one of the worst summers ever because of a cat problem that most cat owners have never heard of. It’s called Feline Redirected Aggression, and it started exactly four weeks ago. Even though we are making progress, re-introducing the the aggressor cat to the victim cat is extremely time consuming, and I don’t think I can do it once I start working again. Every day I think about packing him up and bringing him back to the Humane Society. He is already on the “virtual re-homing” page of the website.

Otherwise, there are quite a few good things about the summer….increased followers on IG, pretty good sales, a gig making lapel flowers for the guests at a guy’s birthday party, talking about professional modeled photography. I haven’t played the viola since an awful outdoor afternoon concert on July 4th. Am not worried about it. But this cat thing is really sapping my mental energy, and disturbs the work I’m trying to do. I know I get less done when I have to attend to a meowing cat in kitty prison.

      Hi Helen,

I’m so sorry about your cat issue! I thought I saw on FB today that you had found a solution involving a scented collar, but I don’t know if that has fixed the aggression problem or if the collar was for something else. Every once in a while I think about having a pet – for about 10 seconds. But here in NY, apartment space is so limited that the idea of giving up some of it for a litter box (if the pet was a cat) really doesn’t seem prudent. And, the other option, going out on walks with a pooper scooper (for a dog), doesn’t appeal either. I guess my plants are my pets…

Speaking of, I bought two pretty reclaimed wood window boxes on Etsy today. At the end of the summer, I’m going to move my succulents indoors so that I can have a nice window box garden through the winter. I have to decide what to do with my aloe plants, though. I have one HUMONGOUS aloe plants that has produced many babies…some are not so small anymore either. The aloes grow so fast and tall that I don’t want them in the window boxes. I might have to murder some… I don’t suppose they would last outside in the winter would they?

Anyhoo, I hope you’re staying cool. It’s been very hot here (and from what I hear, it’s also hot in Milwaukee.)
