This past week I spent a LOT of time traveling by bus with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra to Princeton, NJ for a series of rehearsals and a concert as part of the Edward T. Cone Composition Institute. Promoting new music and emerging young composers, the Institute provides a chance for the talented composers to hear their compositions performed by a symphony orchestra. In addition, they receive career-enriching mentoring and coaching from music industry leaders.
I enjoyed the chance to be a part of the Institute and to become acquainted with the different compositions. (And in case you’re curious, here’s a sampling of one of my favorite pieces from the week – a composition entitled Farthest South by composer Matthew Browne)
Of course, the hours spent stuck in traffic on the bus also gave me ample time for people watching and cartooning. And although I did not pull out my sketchbook during the rehearsal, my memory served fairly well for a cartoon sketch of conductor David Robertson.
Through the bus window: Man reading on a bus stop at 168th and Broadway –
Woman outside the Jammin’ Crepes restaurant in Princeton –
Maestro Robertson consulting his score…
Man lounging in the public square in Princeton…
(P.S. In case you’re wondering, I’m still on the road – with the New York City Ballet in Saratoga, NY this time -hence the hand-held snapshots of my sketchbook!)
Nice! Hope you’re enjoying Saratoga.
You are a busy gal… Amusing sketches, great!
Thanks, Denise!
Hope you’re having a nice week. It’s a beautiful day in Saratoga which makes rehearsing and performing in the semi-outdoor venue a lot more pleasureful.

Hi Meh-meh,
I’m glad you liked my sketch of the man lounging in the chair! I haven’t had much time to do any sketching this week (or photography, either!) but hopefully I can make good use of the free time on Sunday and Monday. Can’t wait!
