Being away from home this week hasn’t deterred my commitment to meeting the Inktober 2019, 31-day ink drawing challenge. I’ve gotten pretty good over the past few years knowing which drawing supplies to pack when I travel. That said, filming videos without my cellphone stand has been a challenge. But – as we all know – necessity IS the mother of invention. On this trip, I’ve even found a clever workaround for the no-cellphone stand issue! For the two new Inktober drawing videos below, my drawing “table” was my lap. To get an unobstructed video view from my phone, I balanced the phone off the edge of the desk while using the hotel desk phone as a counter weight…precarious, but it did the trick!

I created these two Inktober drawing videos on Bristol board with my beloved Sailor Fude Nib fountain pen. (Both are essential items in my travel drawing kit!)

I also brought along my Panasonic Lumix camera. The reason? I wanted to play around with taking photos of my illustrations. Yes, soon a collection of my original illustrations will be available for sale on this site! At home, I’ve had mixed success with creating product shots of these illustrations with my cell phone. Today I set up a test shot using a white hotel wash cloth and the white hotel stationery as “subjects” while I played around with the ISO and f-stop settings on my Lumix. And though I don’t plan to post my Still Life with Paper and Washcloth photo, I have to say that the results were encouraging.

Finally, in closing I’d like to say…

Yes, your jewelry box was my inspiration in that drawing. Did Dad make it for you?
