The deadline for this month’s Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators Draw This contest is fast approaching. The prompt word for November’s challenge is Leftovers. It’s a timely one, too, since Thanksgiving is just around the corner! For this new contest, I created my childlike artwork by first working out the general composition on my new whiteboard.

By the way, I highly recommend the whiteboards, dry-erase pens and erasers from this company. Unlike most whiteboards, these boards really do erase completely cleanly. Furthermore, the board’s sturdy wooden core keeps it from warping. And the non-porous surface is less shiny which makes photographing it a lot easier.

As you can see, my childlike illustration came to life with the addition of watercolor –

For this illustration I drew with my favorite Sailor Fude Nib fountain pen on cold press watercolor paper. For the colors, I chose a limited palette featuring the following Daniel Smith watercolors:

  • Quinacridone Rose
  • Lemon Yellow
  • French Ultramarine

The result is pretty tasty, right?

How about you?

What are you cooking for Thanksgiving? And are you looking forward to having leftovers? My favorite leftovers are the pies…so I’d better get to work making them!
