One of the best things about being an illustrator is that I can often enter into a state of flow and lose myself in my work. In my latest Youtube video – an illustrated approach to creative flow – you’ll learn some of my methods for encouraging flow. You’ll also get to meet my new studio assistant! (He’s truly lovely and oh so cute…)
And, speaking of creative flow…
Last week I posted some manly art sketches. As promised, I’ve also been trying to get into the “flow” of creating more woman character sketches. These funny ladies haven’t all turned out perfectly, but as usual, they are keeping me amused.

Here’s the full spread:

I drew the illustrations above freehand in ink with my Noodler’s Ahab Flex Fountain pen. The coloring was done with my fan watercolor palette.
In case you’re wondering…
There are some wonderful female cartoonist/illustrators out there. Some of my current favorites include:

wonderful video, Joana! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you, Jim! It was so nice to see Sasha today – even though we could really only smile (with our eyes!) and wave from afar. I hope you’re doing well and that our paths cross again soon. 🙂 Joana
Ooh, I like your new little muse! Hope he cavorts in more of your videos. Xoxo mm
Hi Mm,
I’ll see if I can rope Ziggy into more appearances. I don’t yet have your touch with the training, but then again I don’t yet have the chicken either. 😉 Hee-hee! xox – J
Well, I already do the meditation and the cats, so maybe I should do more recreational walking outdoors! Enjoying the feminine drawings and the new kitty.
Hi Helen,
I LOVE my walks outside. Ever since lockdown in March, I’ve been going out to exercise in the morning and then I almost always go for a brisk shorter walk either just before dinner or just afterwards. The evening walks have really helped to energy and lift my mood. 🙂 I hope you have a lovely week. Stay safe, my dear! xox – Joana
