If you’re feeling stuck for inspiration, sometimes the best remedy is to give yourself a break. That’s what I did last weekend. Of course, it helped that the break included delicious swims in the lake at my mom’s cottage in New Hampshire. And the farm-fresh produce we ate must have provided some needed nutrients, too, because I’ve been feeling reenergized and focused. Suffice to say, I’m back at it – humorous illustrations are the proof!
Back At It – Humorous Illustrations
I drew inspiration for the first full-page spread in my new Moleskine notebook from a roll of Washi tape. (I use Washi tape to affix watercolor paper to my drafting table so that it doesn’t buckle. That is, of course, when I’m illustrating on watercolor paper and not in my Moleskine notebook.)
This short video shows the genesis of the idea for the illustration:
In Part 2 you can see the finished illustration:
Here’s a closer look:
Meanwhile, the long bus ride to New Hampshire and back…
Meant even more enforced couple time with my husband (as if we haven’t had enough of that during the pandemic!) Fortunately, we love each other and get along really well most of the time. Hopefully, that will still be the case when my husband sees this next illustration…
Can you relate?
Actually…
None of the couples, above, are supposed to look like me or my husband. But this silly little illustration, drawn on the bus somewhere between Massachusetts and New Hampshire, is a lot more realistic…
P.S.

Very cute, all of it! I agree, a change of scene is especially valuable!
Hi Helen,
It’s hard to believe that we were in NH since the trip was so short. But from Ziggy’s perspective we were probably gone for years. Fortunately, he forgave us within minutes. Ffeuuf!
Happy July 4th! Enjoy those raspberry baked treats!

That last one really is quite accurate, I must say. I love your scenes from a marriage. (what is that coming out of the Jon?)
Hi Mm, I love drawing Maestro, though he just rolls his eyes when he sees my creations. Hee-hee. I’m not sure he has your sense of humor where it comes to my portraits.
The spray coming out of the toilet is whatever you want it to be. (Suffice to say that it’s probably not good.)

Delightful! Your upbeat creativity is infectious.
Thank you, Jen! I hope you’re having a lovely holiday weekend. It’s quite cool here today, but that’s a welcome change since the last few days were beastly hot. Speaking of “beasts”, our little Ziggy just rappelled up my office chair and is now investigating my lap. Must give him lots of attention…;-)
